A Gem in the Sierras

Believe it or not I have never been to Plumas and Sierra counties, the gorgeous area northwest of Lake Tahoe. Thanks to friend and colleague, Maureen Ternus, we recently spent a couple days in the Lakes Basin Recreation Area. We viewed stunning, almost unbelievable lakes including Sardine, Packer and Gold. A highlight of the trip was staying at the Sierra Sky Lodge owned by Wendy and Wayne Yates. The family owes this darling 8 room motel right off highway 70 between Graeagle and Quincy.

We briefly met Wayne and Wendy (they both couldn’t have been nicer!) and had a chance to speak more at length with Margaret, Wendy’s mom, who checked us in and served us breakfast in the morning. The Yates share history of their purchase and remodel of this cute property on their website and they really invite you into their “home”.

The place has many outdoor areas to sit and enjoy the quiet peaceful forest but you can also play horseshoes, volleyball, make s’mores (we did!) or swim in the pool.

Breakfast is served at a time you select between 8-10 am. Choose homemade bread, jam, and egg casserole with fresh fruit and baked goods from Bell Lane Bakery in Quincy.

Oatmeal, cold cereal or yogurt also available. While there are several gorgeous properties in the area, Sierra Sky Lodge is a gem and we highly recommend staying there. We will definitely be back!
